Getting started

From zero to your first sale.

Install the plugin, set up payments and publish a product. Most steps take a few minutes, and nothing here needs a licence key.

Before you start

Three requirements, and the download.

Requirements

  • WordPress 6.4 or later
  • PHP 8.1 or later
  • HTTPS, which Apple Pay requires

The download

A free download from the WordPress.org plugin directory is in preparation. Until then, the WopCart zip comes with WopCart Direct and is in your account after purchase.

Two editions

The free plugin settles payments through WopCart at 2% per sale. WopCart Direct is an add-on that brings your own gateway accounts and removes the fee. Steps 1 to 7 are the same either way.

1

Install and activate

  • In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin and upload the WopCart zip. You can also copy the wopcart folder into /wp-content/plugins/.
  • Activate the plugin.
  • The checkout, confirmation and account pages are created for you. If you delete one, create a new page and select it in the settings.

2

Configure your store

  • Go to WopCart → Settings → General.
  • Enter your store name and store country. The store country decides which tax rules apply to you as the seller.
  • Set your base currency and check the pages selected under Pages.

3

Set up payments

Free plugin

Payments are settled through WopCart’s Stripe Connect platform and charged to your own connected Stripe account. You enter no gateway keys. 2% of each transaction is retained as the WopCart platform fee. Stripe and Apple Pay are available.

With WopCart Direct

Install the add-on and activate its licence key. The fields for your own accounts then appear under WopCart → Settings → Payments:

  • Stripe: publishable and secret keys for test and live mode, and the webhook signing secret. Without the signing secret, webhooks are rejected and renewals are not recorded.
  • PayPal: client ID and secret for sandbox and live, and the webhook ID.
  • Mollie, Authorize.net and 2Checkout: the credentials from your account.

Either way

  • Choose your enabled gateways and the default gateway under Active gateways.
  • Turn on Test mode while you set up. It routes every gateway to its sandbox.
  • For Apple Pay, turn on Show the Apple Pay button. Your site needs HTTPS, and the domain must be registered with Stripe once.

4

Create a product

  • Go to WopCart → Products and add a product with a title and description.
  • In the Product Data panel, choose the product type: a standard product or a bundle of other products.
  • Choose a tax class: standard rate for digital goods, reduced rate, e-publication rate or not taxable.
  • Selling something physical? Turn on shipping for the product and enter weight and dimensions. Stock, shipping zones and rates are under WopCart → Settings → Shipping.

5

Add price options

  • On the Pricing tab, enter a price. Leave it empty or at zero for a free product.
  • To sell tiers such as Single Site, 5 Sites and Unlimited, or monthly and yearly plans, turn on Offer several price options.
  • For each option, enter a label and price and choose one-off or recurring.
  • For recurring options, set the billing interval, an optional trial in days and the number of charges. Zero bills until the customer cancels.
  • To set fixed prices in other currencies instead of converted ones, use the Currencies tab.

6

Attach files

  • On the Files tab, click Add file, choose the file and enter a download name.
  • Tick the price options that include this file. If you tick none, every option includes it.
  • Buyers get signed download links on the confirmation page, in the receipt and in their account. Links last one hour by default; change this and set download limits under WopCart → Settings → Downloads.

7

Sell software with licences

  • On the Licensing tab, turn on Issue license keys for this product.
  • Set sites per licence, or sites per price option for tiers. Zero means unlimited. Local and staging installs use no seat.
  • Set a licence length in days, or choose a lifetime licence.
  • Under Update server, enter the slug, plugin basename, current version, required WordPress and PHP versions, “tested up to” and changelog, and choose the update package: the zip your customers install.
  • Copy class-wopcart-updater.php from the plugin’s client folder into your product and set it up with your store URL, product ID, version and the customer’s licence key.

Store-wide licensing options, including the cap on free local and staging activations, are under WopCart → Settings → Licensing. More about software licensing.

8

Add WopCart Direct, if you bought it

  • Buy the add-on on the pricing page and download its zip from your wopcart.com account.
  • Upload and activate it next to WopCart. Nothing is replaced, and your store keeps running throughout.
  • Paste the licence key from your account into WopCart → Settings → Payments and save. This activates the site and uses one domain slot, unless it is local or staging.
  • Enter your gateway credentials. From the next sale, payments go to your own accounts and WopCart takes no fee.

The licence is confirmed again about twice a day. Each check sends the site address, the key and the plugin version, and nothing about your customers or sales. Removing the key releases the slot.

9

Test a purchase

  • With test mode on, buy your product using your gateway’s test card or sandbox account.
  • Check the confirmation page, the receipt email, the download link and, if enabled, the licence key on the account page.
  • Turn test mode off when you are ready to sell.
